Earlier in the month phenomenal artist David Broughton did a dissection of his work on Oscar Maltby's demented story "Time Templars Vs the Daemonic Dinos" in the first Journal. You can read more into his process here and do check out more of him because he's simply ridiculous - the man did a page A DAY last December for the 2000ad forum advent calendar. Blimey. Bloody blimey.

What have Simon Bisley and Pat Mills got to do with the second Journal of 2013? All will be revealed this August when we launch it at Melksham comic con. Rest assured, it'll concern the brilliantly mad Bruno Stahl in some way.

Talking of Issue 2 - here's the first official teaser! From Arran Frood a Bristol-based science writer and regular attendee of Bristol Comic Creators meetings he's a veritable chap and makes his Journal (and small press) debut this issue. Also making appearing for the first time in the Journal is freelance illustrator Steven Austin who's been doing a bit of everything marvellously for quite a while now - he caught my eye with these marvellous test pages done from 2000ad's sample scripts. "Is It Safe to Go Back?" is one of our more dark and thoughtful tales - expect more teasers soon as it's going to be a BEEFY issue. It won't contain beef though. Unless you buy the variant beef edition which won't exist.

This chirpy version of our logo is representing us on the Thought Bubble exhibitors area and if you click on it a GIANT WHITE SQUARE EMERGES. WOOOOOOAAAAH. You can see it here, we're nestled amongst some of the best people in the small press which is smashin' and lovely.

It's been a busy old fortnight for the Journal - we've sold over half of our first print run in a month and we made our second convention appearance at DemonCon5 in Maidstone. Cheers to the Grinning Demon for putting it together, we shall return!

We've also had our first review from contributor Alan Holloway over at his blog who said lovely, lovely things. If you know someone who'll review it or want to review it yourself - give us a shout at psychedelic.submissions@gmail.com and I'll fling you a PDF.

Another reminder about submissions for Issue 3 - we've now only 30 or so pages left to fill. The deadline is July 1st but, as with Issue 2, we may fill it long before then. Also, as there was some confusion, if you've submitted to a previous issue you CAN submit to the third! So... well there's no excuse. If you've got a psychedelic time travel story that needs telling, or you want to draw one let us know - !

Cardiff and Other Goings On

Here is me, editor O, unsuccessfully hiding behind the MASSIVE new Journal banner. It doesn't half honk of solvents, but that's what makes it so blummin magic. Half an hour hanging around it and the vortex begins to move...... believe me.

Here's a teaser for "Thinking Outside the Box" by Richard McAuliffe & Matt Herbert from Issue 1. Mr McAuliffe is the award-winning chap behind Everything Comes Back to 2000ad who gave us a lovely shout-out before Cardiff. He's turned out a dark dark dark dark tale for our first issue, beautifully illustrated by the ultra-talented Mr Herbert who's being wowing the living balls off of everybody with his recent turn on Shakara in the latest Zarjaz. Also his phenomenal sculptures need to be seen to be believed.

Talking of time travel (we sort of always are by default) here is a mouthwatering teaser for Issue 2 which is being beavered away on as we speak - this particular tale is by writer Mike Lynch & artist Ross Bampfylde. More as the year progresses - !!! Needless to say, if you liked issue 1, this one is twice as big and three times as bizarre...

Here's a bit of continuity cake for you - a pre-convention shot of the progression from Dr WTF 2011 to the first Journal. Dr WTF was the time lordy precursor to the Journal and now only exists digitally. Here's to further years!

The final teaser for the first Journal before it surfaced at Cardiff was this: "Were, Are, Shall Be" by Adam Page and Steven Denton. Mr Page is a writer who contributed to the last Dr WTF and the upcoming second Professor Elemental comic. Mr Denton is veritable small press icon, colourist extraordinaire and co-creator of the glorious Massacre for Boys. With this final teaser I'd also take this opportunity to thank lettering gods Dan Bell & Nikki Foxrobot for their invaluable assistance. The finished Journal would be nowt without them - !

Seen here braving the intoxicating bannerwaft is our glorious co-editor Geoffery Crescent and the stash. Cardiff was the perfect place to debut; being as it was incredibly intimate but very busy. Pretty much everyone who passed seemed intrigued and we sold a fair bit. Hats off to the organizers for making it such a positive con for our first! Also: THE AUTHORITIES GOT INVOLVED....

Judges Pal & Burdis were pretty close to confiscating our heady banner. What changed their minds? Well, I'm not saying "bribery" but it was pretty close. The issue is done - the printers are rolling and the promo rhino is being prepped for launch. Have you ever tried to launch a rhino? It's not easy!

January Update

I stand in front of you with a near-completed issue 1 - we're days away from the printers and BLIMEY IS IT WEIRD. Just compiling it me and m'colleagues head to wear extra boring clothes to prevent Psychedelic infection. Isn't fun to wear boring clothes, but it's less fun spending seven years in Finland under the impression that you be an otter.

This was me in the nineties

!!!SCRIPT SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN!!!

That they are ! Issue 3 needs a' filling and YOU are to fill it. YOU I said! Here's a bullet-pointed brief -

 - 1-to-4 pages 

 - MUST contain time travel

 - MUST be a one-off - no epic sagas, no tie-ins etc

Talking of our assistant editor - Geoffery's story "Cuthbert Wax: Eco Warrior" got itself a teaser in the last fortnight - the artist is the wonderful Darren Stephens who can draw up a STORM and is a lovely chap - see more on his blog! http://dikiminster.blogspot.co.uk/

Geoffery meanwhile is thigh-deep in a giant bloody fantasy novel - get in here and remember the Vav are coming.

A few teasers doing the rounds are for Mike Lynch & Neil Ford's "3000 Dollar Second" - which is, frankly, stunning. Mike Lynch is more writer than man - one of the chaps behind Abandoned Comics and his Nestor comic won ICN's "Best Indy Comic" award last year. Which is blooming rad. Mike Lynch is no stranger to the Psychedelic stable having written "Clerical Error" the first strip in Dr WTF 2012. 

Neil Ford is relatively new to the small press scene having provided the striking cover to FutureQuake #18 - after the Journal we hope he gets snatched up. Not by an eagle. Which would be unpleasant.

This here image above depicts two battlin' robots. It was for a Mr Robert who was the 70th "like" for our Psychedelic FB page - took me a while to get 'round to it as we're now on 168! For the 170th like I'll draw another picture - and I'll also draw summat for the 60th follower of the Psychedelic Twitter.

Our final teaser is for "History Lesson" by Alan Holloway and George Coleman  - 

George Coleman a.k.a. Dode C is a bonafide comics legend - having even drawn for the mighty 2000ad in his time - he mailed me the physical pages and I was BOWLED OVER.

Literally. I fell over immediately after this. Alan Holloway is a playwright, a rock reviewer, a stand-up, he won the Weakest Link and I'm pretty certain he could destroy Weston Super-Mare with a single thought if he needed to. Don't press him, Westoners! 

Let your wanderings through this glistening and bewildering void be pleasant - and watch out for otters, you never know WHO they'll be!
